PROCEDURE FOR SESSION ONE WHAT IS THE BIBLE?
- Welcoming Words and Prayer - Opening Exercise: Meeting God Meditation --- "close your eyes. Relax. Let your limbs go loose. Feel the muscles relaxing in your feet, your legs, your fingers, your hands, your arms. You feel at ease. Your eyes are closed. It is dark and you are feeling at ease. In the darkness anything is possible. You begin to think about God - about meeting God - you hear and feel and see him approaching. Finally God appears before you - you meet him, you see him. What does he look like? As you look at God you look also around you. Where are you? What is it like there? Then, as you look around, as you look at God and at the place you are in, you hear God say something to you. God speaks to you. And when he is finished - you begin to feel again the seat your sitting in, you begin to feel your arms and legs, and you slowly open our eyes, and you come back to this room and this place." --- questions: What did God say to you? What did God look like? Where did you see you God? - Introduction: One of the places we meet God is in the Bible. There we see other places that he appears; there we hear him speaking. The Bible reveals God to us. It shows us where he is and what he may say. Each session we will ask near the end two or three questions. One of the questions will be: "where do you see God in this session? What has God said to you tonight? We will ask this question because it is our conviction that God speaks to us not only in the Bible, but today. We will attempt to build from our encounters with God and God's word, an understanding of what God is like and what God does. We will try also to build an understanding of what it is that we need from God and what it is God wants us to know and do. Our approach will be as inductive" as we can make it. This means that we will try to look at all the facts and events we can and then draw from them conclusions about God, his purpose, and our relationship to Him. - Looking At The Bible As A Whole - Share and Post: What kinds of books are in the Bible? What kinds of writing? - Discuss: What ties all this material together? Read II Timothy 3:14-17 What does Paul say ties the material together? - Looking At "The Word of God" - In Groups: look up from a concordance the term "Word of God". Each group will be asked to summarize what the passages refer to when they use that term. Examine: I Sam 9:27; I Kin 12:22; I Chr 17:3; Pro 30:5; Isa 40:8; Mark 7:13; Luke 3:2; Act 8:14; Rom 10:17; Eph 6:17; Heb 4:12; II Pet 3:5; etc. Discuss what the word of God is and where it is encountered. - Looking At Scripture: - Outline how it was collected and why. Discuss the church's role in defining the scripture. Mention the problem of interpretation and the role of the church in this. Turn to the Magnificat and discuss the meanings we get from it. - Wrapping Up: - Read John 5:36-41. Discuss the purpose of the Bible again. Describe the concept of salvation history. Ask in conclusion: What are scriptures for? How does Jesus regard the scriptures and what we should with them? - Conclusion: What new understanding do you take away with you tonight? What is God saying to you about the Bible and your use of it? Richard J. Fairchild Charlene E. Fairchild July 1991, September 1996
